I’m a religious runner, as some of you know, but lately I’ve been thinking about why I run. I run because it makes me strong. My mind and my body are working together to reach higher goals and I’ve been craving the feeling of trying new things, like weight training. Running also makes me happy (and prevents me from causing any kind of harm against my husband. Right, Elle?!)
Not only are there mental and physical benefits of running & exercise, but there are also spiritual benefits. Say whaaaat?! Yes, it’s true. Recently I came across the talk “Good Health — A Key to Joyous Living” by Barbara B. Smith from October 1978. She states, “The state of our health affects every facet of our life — our feeling of personal well-being, our approach to work, our social interactions — even our service to the Lord.” Wow. Our Heavenly Father blessed us with beautiful, strong, incredible bodies that were created to work, serve, and be treated sacredly. If we do these things, the Lord has promised us we “shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint” (D&C 89:20).
Sister Smith continues, “In our busy lives sometimes we are prone to excuse ourselves for not getting proper exercise by saying that we have neither the time nor opportunity.” I know how real this is. Between unpredictable weather (I dislike treadmills), an insane work and school schedule while I was in college, and the limited resources I had as a missionary, sweating it out in my living room was my easiest solution. It might very well be yours, too. Obstacles that may hinder you from taking a more active approach to your personal health & fitness are 1) not having the time to drive to a fitness center on a regular basis 2) no child care 3) consistent travel (our hard working spouses, you know) and 4) financial obligations. But now is your time to take advantage of at home fitness and using your body as your best work out tool! I know I’ve loved it, so as my thank you to each of you for sticking with me during the beginning stages of my blogging career, I’m giving you the book that has been my best workout buddy for the last several years. Each exercise circuit I’ve hand picked from my favorite pinterest boards so you’ll be able to burn fat, tone every muscle, improve your fitness and enjoy time to yourself in a quiet space, day or night. Or for a social twist, challenge your spouse to a friendly face-off — just keep the smack talk to a minimum 😉
